In your opinion is there a difference between being “tough on crime” and being “smart on crime”? Please explain.
Of course, there is a difference between being “tough on crime” and “smart on crime”. Tough on crime intimates an across the board type stance where stiff penalties are sought without any thought of individual circumstances. A “smart “ on crime stance is one where a prosecutor not only takes into consideration the individual facts and circumstances of the specific case but also considers the best approach to best utilize existing resources to combat/deter crime.
- Should minor offenses be decriminalized, resulting in fines instead of jail time?
I would be open to considering this for crimes that are non-violent,
- Do you favor using pretrial risk assessment? Will you recommend pretrial supervision?
Yes and yes, again for non-violent offenses.
- Would you work to expand criminal diversions in which willing victims and offenders are offered mediation?
Yes.
- Would you support reentry programs to improve employment opportunities for inmates returning from state prison sentences?
Yes.
- Would you support mental health screening and treatment of pretrial detainees?
Absolutely.
